February in the Garden

Beware the Valentine's Freeze! Be sure to check the 10day forecast before getting out there with your pruners or planting your cool season vegetable starts.

Pruning

  • Bush Roses

  • Fruit Trees

  • Perennial tops

  • Any dead/diseased areas of shrubs & trees

Planting

  • Cool season annuals like pansies, snapdragons, even petunias

  • Vegetables like broccoli, collards, arugula, as well as seed potatoes

  • Trees and shrubs - There's still time to catch some dormant root development

  • Perennials - Dividing and relocating as needed

Planning

  • Use the short, cold days this month to sketch out your spring vegetable garden and look over your garden journal from last year

  • If you're in search of a landscaping service, now is a great time to get quotes before the busy season starts

  • Need bulk mulch and soil? Get it delivered with plenty of time to spare so that you can focus on planting later

Mulch

  • THIS one remains on the list year round, so don't ignore it!

  • For this month, a good, thick layer will prevent those first spring weeds from making their way into the beds you've been working so hard on.
