April in the Garden

Earth Day happens in April for a reason!
Pruning
Most pruning should be complete by now - focus on crape myrtle suckers and the like
Planting
Now is the time for starting your vinca, pentas, lantanas, and other summer annuals
Here's your first real opportunity for planting okra, melons, corn and such. There's still plenty of time for peppers, tomatoes, and squash as well as any herbs.
Trees and shrubs - Get them in while we're in the rainy season...don't wait too much longer!
Perennials - Keep on planting!
Bulbs - You've got a few weeks more to get in your lilies and gladiolus.
Planning
Fertilize - Keep your annuals and vegetables fertilized. Go ahead and give a dose to your perennials and shrubs if you haven't already
Weeding - It's a must to keep up with this task while they're still small. It's much easier to pull bermuda when it's just coming out of dormancy...trust me on this!
Watering - Resist the urge! As long as we're getting 1 inch per week, your new plantings should be fine. Added bonus if you have already mulched those beds :)
Birds - Don't forget your feathered friends! Hang those hummingbird feeders and clean those bird baths ;)
Accoutrements - Remember to grab those tomato cages, twine, plant tape, and garden gloves while you're out and about this month
Mulch
THIS one remains on the list year round, so don't ignore it!
This month, apply a nice THICK layer to your beds and trees (Texas A&M recommends 3 inches for maximum weed control and moisture retention)
